The meaning of engagement rings

The engagement ring is an object couple used to represent love, devotion, and faithfulness to each other. Rings come in different shapes and designs to suit purposes and add special meaning to their users. When a couple chooses an engagement ring, they select the one that perfectly symbolizes their relationship.

General Engagement Ring Symbolism

The use of engagement rings was first recorded in 1477 when Archduke Maximillian gave to his fiancée, Mary of Burgundy, a diamond ring as a symbol of the love between the pair. Before this period, ordinary people used smooth metal rings, while silver and gold rings were for those from royal families. Low-quality gems were common among the people at that time, too. These days, however, couples prefer solitaires, but some other types of gemstones are gaining popularity as well.

Previously, engagement rings were part of the bride price the groom paid. It symbolized that the man was committed to marrying the woman or that the woman was already taken and not available anymore for other men. Engagement rings also signified the economic status of the groom, especially if the gem was of high quality.

History has it that the use of engagement rings started in Ancient Rome. The Romans believed that the left ring finger had the love vein in it or what they called the “vena amoris”. So, they usually wore their rings on the left finger, and this is also close to the position of the human heart. Similarly, the Egyptians wore rings as a symbol of love between couples. Apart from this, they wore engagement bands on the left ring finger, just close to the heart.

The Circle

Engagement rings are shaped like a circle, and circles are sacred and symbolic. A circle represents something which has neither a beginning nor an end. It means something eternal, whole and more or less perfect. A circle is associated with the sun, moon and the planets. These heavenly bodies help to support life on earth just the same way rings bring together two people who are in love with each other.

The Double Ring Ceremony

When the Second World War raged on, wives, girlfriends, and fiancées were left at home. The use of the double ring became popular then, specifically in the UK. The double ring was made for a bride and a groom, unlike the earlier times when only the bride received a ring. In the present time, the use of the double ring is popular during wedding ceremonies, and men’s putting on engagement rings is just an extended symbol of love.
